The Western Cape, east of Agulhas provides peaceful farm or holiday accommodation and allows one to meander through the countryside mostly on gravel roads.  The Swellendam farming community is known for Merino sheep and produces high quality wool.  Bee-keeping is also part of farming activities of the area.  South of Swellendam, the National Bontebok Park is worth a visit.
From the De Hoop Nature Reserve one can cross the Bree River by pontoon at Malgas.  Malgas was established in the 19th century to alleviate the alternate long distance of 60km across the hilly Ruens from Swellendam to Port Beaufort, near Witsand.  On the west bank of the Bree River there is a deep channel where sailing ships in the mid 1800's could draw alongside.  This jetty is upstream of the present pont crossing.
Witsand, named after the sand bar at the wide mouth of the Bree(de) Rivier and the long stretches of beach, is termed the whale nursery where whales come to spawn and calve from June to October.  The Breede river estuary at Witsand is a South African fishing paradise in a stunning setting of natural fynbos with sandy beaches.
East of Witsand, is Stilbaai, a popular tourist destination at the start of the Garden Route.  Stilbaai situated 26 km from Riversdale is at an estuary where the Goukou river meets the Indian Ocean.  Enjoy perfect holiday accommodation in Stilbaai where there are long stretches of white sandy beaches, mild weather and the river is navigable for 15 km.
