De Kelders borders on the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. The area has a popular hiking and whale watching trail, overlooking Walker Bay, that stretches from Klipgat to Stanford’s Cove. In this area, the Klipgat Cave has provided evidence of human habitation going back 2 000 years. Gansbaai (Goose Bay), named after the Egyptian geese that settled at a freshwater spring at the beach, dates back to the 1880s with its fishermen’s cottages on the dunes overlooking the harbour. Gansbaai has since been a commercial fishing area. Nearby, Kleinbaai, has become the base for whale-watching and shark-cage diving boats that take visitors to nearby Dyer Island. Franskraal lies at the start of an 8km long sandy beach across the UilKraals river estuary that is a popular birding area. Worth a visit is The Groot Melkhoutbos Trail a 2km walk that takes you through the Milkwood forest along the shore. The privately owned, Strandveld Museum houses relics from the HMS Birkenhead shipwreck off the Danger Point peninsula in 1852.
