Photo Exhibition and Film from Jürgen Schadeberg

Posted for 3 Nov 2010
Photo Exhibition and Film from Jürgen Schadeberg forms part of the German Cultural Weeks from October to February 2011 -
German-born photographer and director Jürgen Schadeberg
is best known for his work at the Johannesburg based Drum magazine in the 1950s and 1960s. Schadeberg, who emigrated to South Africa and joined Drum in 1951, captured the underground township jazz scene, black resistance to the apartheid regime and multi-cultural life in a defiant Sophiatown. His images are regarded as beacons of struggle photography, often depicting African life and resistance to an increasingly repressive National Party government.  In 1964, after harassment from the security police, he decided to leave South Africa.  Having returned to South Africa in the 1980s, he presently lives in France.

You are kindly invited to
the Opening of the exhibition at 18h00 on 03 November 2010

The Exhibition Images of the Berlin Wall (Mauerbilder) 1961 will run from
Thursday, 4 November to Saturday, 20 November 2010

VENUE: Erdmann Contemporary, 63 Shortmarket Street
HOURS: Mon - Fr 10.00 - 17.00, Sat 11.00 - 13.00
TICKETS: Free admission

This exhibition focuses on Schadeberg’s impressions of the Berlin Wall which artificially divided people, not only fostering mutual distrust and hostility but becoming one of the strongest
symbols of the Cold War.
The prints allow an indepth reflection on the centrality of that barrier as a testimony of separation during perhaps the most tumultuous century in human history.
As part of the exhibition Erdmann Contemporary will organise a 'social photography workshop' with Schadeberg mainly for township-based photographers (on invitation only).

A film produced by Schadeberg about Robben Island will be screened at the Alliance Française. Jürgen Schadeberg will be present and prepared to answer questions not only related to this film:

Voices from Robben Island (1994, 90 minutes) directed by Jürgen Schadeberg
DATE: Thursday, 4 November 2010, 19h00
VENUE: Alliance Française, 155 Loop Street, Cape Town
TICKETS: Free admission
