For over 100 years now the Minstrels have brought life and music to the streets of Cape Town.
The Minstrel Carnival Competition with its
Tweede Nuwejaar Street Parade has become one of our city’s most important cultural traditions.
On this anniversary, it is worth remembering that the Minstrels started as a movement to reclaim the streets by those suffering political oppression. With the birth of democracy in our country, it has become a joyful celebration of their success, which makes this centenary all the more significant.
The Annual Minstrel Carnival Competition will be held at the newly upgraded
Athlone Stadium starting on
Monday January 2nd on Tweede Nuwejaar as is the tradition:
The Dates are as follows:
- Monday 02/01/12 (Street Parade)
- Tuesday 03/01/12
- Saturday 07/01/12
- Saturday 14/01/12
- Saturday 21/01/12
- Saturday 28/01/12
- Saturday 04/02/12
- Saturday 11/02/12
"Now the minstrels face a new challenge by making their carnivals better every year, until they are just as big and successful as the world famous Rio and Trinidad Carnivals. This will attract tens of thousands spectators, especially tourists, and bring higher levels of income to the performers.
As the Minstrels move into their second Century, I wish them all well, and pledge the City of Cape Town’s commitment to preserving and promoting their tradition." – Helen Zille – Premier
