Cape Town Carnival this year, traditionally taking place in
Long Street, will expand its route to the Cape Town Fan Walk, in Somerset Rd on Saturday March 24th, 2012.
Starting at 8.00pm more than 2500 costumed singers, dancers and musicians along with 10 giant floats, puppets, jugglers, fire dancers and marching bands will proceed from Chiappini street along to York Rd and Green Point that is ablaze with colour, lights and dancers, welcoming everyone to the Carnival.
Booming sound systems, pods of drummers and and giant LED with live footage will add to the atmosphere.
As the last float passes through the purpose-built exit at the top end of York Rd
, the DJ will turn up the beat and thousands of revellers will party the night away in a vibrant street party, re-igniting the party spirit which was started in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The party will continue until midnight
The Cape Town Carnival was born out of a
visit to Brazil in 2009 to
the Rio Carnival, by several influential Capetonians. During the Rio Carnival, they were asked the question 'Does anything similar exist in Cape Town?' Whereas Brazil can boast one single language, a single religion and a single musical genre, South Africa is known throughout the world for exactly the opposite. We celebrate our diversity of culture, language, colour, race, gender. We celebrate the fact that we are not the same. The wonder of our recent history is that, although different and diverse, we own a single identity.

Our Carnival experience in Cape Town has all the glamour and sensuality of Rio but with a distinctive African beat.
With plans to grow the carnival to 3000 in glorious costumes, with musicians, drummers, dancers, performers and vibrant and exciting floats, the event is set to become a must on the world calendar.
