GREENING AND RESOURCE EFFICIENCY TOURISM WORKSHOP
As domestic and international tourism grows, so does consumption of water and energy in tourism destinations, including generation of waste. Measurement and management of water, energy, and waste are key in achieving a sustainable tourism industry. Since Tourism has a close relationship with environmental resources, this demonstrates that the industry has key role to play in management of these resources.
By adopting the efficient use of resources in all aspects of the tourism business operations we will be taking the first step in promoting responsible tourism and improving the industry’s sustainability. Promoting and developing tourism in a sustainable manner is a policy of the national government and is captured in the Responsible Tourism Guidelines of 2002.
It is against the above-mentioned background that the
National Department of Tourism (NDT) in partnership with the
Department of Environmental Affairs,
Department of Water Affairs & Forestry and
Eskom, will be undertaking provincial road shows to engage the tourism industry on the importance and implementation of '
Greening and Resource Efficiency' in Tourism.
