The Good Food and Wine Show

Posted for 26 May 2011
The Good Food & Wine Show is South Africa's premiere food, wine and lifestyle show, and the only one of its kind to consistently bring a star-studded line-up of the world's most inspiring chefs to South Africa.
This year the 12th annual show
at the Cape Town International Convention Centre,
from 26 -29 May
will see renowned chef Heston Blumenthal,
the 'Culinary Alchemist'
, in his first-ever public appearance in South Africa.
A self-taught gastronomic genius, Heston is the owner of The Fat Duck, which holds a 3-star Michelin Guide rating and was named best restaurant in the world on more than one occasion. His specialty is gastronomy – the science of food – and his passion for flavour and kitchen chemistry have taken him on an unusual journey that includes odd-sounding period dishes like Meat Fruit from the middle ages and Mock Turtle Soup from the Victorian era, to taste-adventuring with edible insects. Whether you think his creations are tantalizing or just down-right wacky, visitors won't want to miss the chance to see him live at the Samsung Chefs in Action Theatre, in association with AFROX Handigas.

A highlight of the show, the Samsung Chefs in Action Theatre treats visitors to the rare chance to see some of the world’s most inspiring chefs perform live. If that’s not enough, visitors can even rub shoulders with their favourite chefs in the Get Fresh Hands-on Cooking Workshops, sponsored by BBC Lifestyle, in association with DSTV and Woolworths - groups are limited to 12 participants each.

This year’s exciting line-up of celebrity chefs includes:
James Martin: Famous for his moves both in – and out – of the kitchen, James was a finalist on Strictly Come Dancing and has appeared on numerous cooking programmes since 1996 including Ready Steady Cook, Saturday Kitchen, and Sweet Baby James.
Rachel Allen: Author of several books, including Entertaining at Home and Home Cooking, Rachel is a television star, teacher, wife and mother yet she manages to balance her many roles with style and grace. Rachel’s down-to-earth, practical approach takes the stress out of entertaining.
Atul Kochhar: The chef patron of Benares restaurant in Mayfair, Atul is one of the most critically acclaimed chefs in Britain, and the very first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star. He has been instrumental in changing the perception of Indian food in Britain with his bold flavoured, contemporary cooking.
Celia Brooks Brown: Known as the New Urban Farmer, Celia is an established vegetarian food writer with six books to her name, including Entertaining Vegetarians and World Vegetarian Classics, and has also appeared on numerous TV programmes.
Katy Ashworth:  At only 23 years old Katy is new to TV but has definitely found a career that suits her talent. Host to the new flagship CBeebies I Can Cookprogramme which focuses on getting under-sixes in the kitchen, accompanied by Katy's original songs which she sings and plays on her guitar.
Jonathan Daddia: Jonathan began his training on the weekends in his own kitchen and eventually worked unpaid in the Gordon Ramsay restaurant, Petrus. He got his big break as a contestant on the Masterchef series.
Jeremy Mansfield: Home-grown, radio and TV personality, Jeremy Mansfield and co-author of Zhoozsh! will add local flavour. His side-splitting comedic personality is guaranteed to have audiences roaring at Fake It, an interactive showcase of all the latest cheats that let you prepare gourmet meals without an ounce of gourmet effort.

Other show highlights include:

The Health and Wellness Theatre, the newest addition to the show, goes beyond the buzz to highlight global trends in sustainability, plus demonstrations that feature wholesome meals.
An event for the whole family, the show also boasts the CBeebies Little Cooks Zone, in association with DSTV.
The Amarula Outdoor Experience, in association with Weber, Food Network and Tydstroom Poultry, is designed around the outdoor dining experience – including cooking demonstrations on a state-of-the-art Weber braai.
A plethora of beer and whisky tastings will be on hand for the discerning palate, and the Wine Theatre, sponsored by Dometic Waeco, in association with Crystal Direct, will take visitors on a tour of the wine lands without even leaving the show. Premium domestic and imported wines will be available for tasting and purchase at great show prices. Plus, demonstration by the best bartenders in the country at the Interactive Cocktail Theatre will teach visitors to how to unlock their inner mixologist while concocting their favourite tipples.

Remember to always end on a sweet note – the Dessert Theatre and the Lindt Chocolate Theatre with a line-up of decadent treats and workshops

Tickets are R85.00 through Computicket and slightly more at the door. For a full programme, visit www.gourmetsa.com
