CAPE TOWN, South Africa offers a bit of the wild side if you want a real African encounter? –  Adrenalin seekers may wish to cavort with a cheetah, ride a camel, go shark cage-diving, cuddle a cub or come face to face with a baboon!   But more tame options are available - Cape Town is an all-year-round destination, surrounded by magnificent mountains, farms and beaches, with ample opportunity for walking, hiking, beach activities and swimming, or doing the African Safari thing at game farms and other venues.

Eco-tourism is big in Cape Town with its beautiful indigenous ‘Fynbos kingdom’, penguin colonies, nature reserves and growing number of game lodges that offer a bit of the wild side.  Some game farms even offer a safari with the ‘Big Five’!

• Hiking is popular and could include The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, famous for its Cape Point Lighthouse and beautiful vistas of the ocean, and road encounters with troops of baboons.
• Arrange a personal encounter with a Cheetah, or an African eagle, by visiting the conservation outreach programme at Spier Wine Estate outside Stellenbosch.  Other nature parks established for conservation in the Boland area outside Cape Town include the Drakenstein Lion Park and the Bonheur Crocodile farm.
• Family entertainment is never very far away when options on the south Peninsula, include camel rides at Imhoff Farm; ostrich or adventure farmyards; the World of Birds sanctuary, horse riding on the beach, or buffalo viewing at the buffalo breeding project at Solole game farm outside Kommetjie. 
• Other options include Indoor karting, indoor cricket and ten-pin bowling or Cool Runnings’ toboggan track that offers family exercise and entertainment.
•  Adventure sports are fairly new on the adrenalin junkies’ agenda in Cape Town and include shark cage-diving, scuba diving or terra-firma sand boarding, quad biking, kite surfing, jet skiing, tandem paragliding, abseiling, hiking and horse riding.  These activities are made possible at Cape Town’s magnificent beaches, mountains, water sport venues and the sea. There are several businesses offering transport and training for day excursions.
• Walk or Cycle in Cape Town CBD: History and cultural activities at the many museums or African art, crafts and shopping for curios, clothing, or leather are available at a diverse range of venues from large shopping malls to community markets and farm stalls and even street-trading like that on cobbled Green Market Square.
• The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town’s top destination for tourists as a working harbour and venue for entertainment, restaurants, and harbour cruises.  The Robben Island Ferry departs from this venue. 
• Nightlife:  Cape Town has a wide variety of nightlife activities that will appeal to everyone’s taste.  Bars and clubs along Long Street in the city centre is excellent for dancing, drinking and socializing. Grand West Casino and Entertainment World offers popular casino games like poker and blackjack, restaurants and shops, live music performances, movies and ice-skating.
• The safe swimming beaches offer easy exercise choices such as body boarding, snorkelling, sea kayaks and paddling or fishing either from the beach or boat. The beaches are clean and safe and generally have lifeguards in peak season.
• Many travellers come to the Cape for golf.  There are many excellent golf courses that leave the golf enthusiast spoilt for choice.  The weather allows for golf all year round and if it is raining – the Cape has a Mediterranean climate with rain in winter - a drive around the Cape Peninsula or to the many wine estates is always a relaxing alternative.
