Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival

Posted for 8 Jul 2011
Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival is set to dazzle with virtuosity and sublime music making!
The 2011 Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival will run from 8 to 17 July
  • Two student concerts daily,
  • public master classes,
  • the 'In conversation with' lecture series, and
  • the popular faculty chamber music concerts
will take place every evening from 8 to 14 July inclusive.

As has become tradition, the final three evenings of the Festival will feature performances by the Festival Concert and Festival Symphony orchestras.

202 student participants have entered this year including invited groups from as far afield as Nigeria and Belgium. Local invitees include the much loved Bochabela Strings as well as groups from Bloemfontein, Stellenbosch and Cape Town. The faculty is also a mix of new and old with familiar favourites such as Lecolion Washington, Leon Bosch, Daniel Rowland and Frank Stadler, sure to dazzle and inspire with their virtuosity and sublime musical talents. In addition to five new string players from abroad, new faculty faces include a number of woodwind and brass specialists from U.S.A and Europe such as James Austin Smith (Oboe), Weston Sprott (Trombone) and James Nickel (Horn) to name just a few. Two of our most well-loved maestros from abroad, Bernard Gueller and Arjan Tien will be conducting the Festival Symphony and Festival Concert Orchestras respectively and their programmes will include works by Hofmeyr (featuring a hilarious narration by Casper de Vries), Tchaikovsky and Mozart. Internationally acclaimed faculty members, Gareth Lubbe (viola) and Mate Bekavac (Clarinet) will perform concertos by Bartók and Rossini. A truly special mix of pieces will make up the programmes for the chamber music concerts and these will include works from Bach to Stravinsky.

Festival faculty and orchestral concerts take place every evening between 8 and 17 July in the Endler Hall at Stellenbosch University
and concert goers are requested to book early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets are available at computicket and
