If it’s spring, it must be time for the
Hermanus Flower and Eco Fair.
So grab your hats - and your brollie too, just in case - and head off to the
Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The Fair will take place in the
Fernkloof Nature Reserve from
Thursday 22 September to Sunday 25 September from 9am daily.
Flowers will combine with a baby forest at this year’s
Flower and Eco Fair.
2011 is the International Year of Forests so appropriately Hermanus landscape architect
Riaan Maritz will create an Afromontane scene to make us aware of the vulnerability of both fynbos and tree biomes.
Come and enjoy:
- Flower show and display of hundreds of specimens from the area;
- Sale of indigenous plants at the Fernkloof nursery;
- Delicious teas and lunches and a raffle with super prizes;
The Eco-friendly folk from Whale Coast Conservation will be on hand to show how everyone can contribute to conserving the precious fynbos habitat, ensuring the the wonders of the Cape Whale Coast never cease.
- Take a chance on winning a super prize in the raffle or just come and picnic in the magnificent gardens.
- Trees and other bagged plants in the display, as a special offer this year, may be purchased for collection when the show ends at 15h00 on Sunday.
- For the more energetic the 60 km of easy hiking trails in the reserve provide ample scope for those who wish to explore the fynbos-clad mountains overlooking Hermanus.
Never been to Fernkloof? Travelling from Hermanus CBD towards Stanford, look out for Fir Avenue just before you get to the Voëlklip circle and head up the road towards the mountain – just follow the signs. There is ample free parking just outside the Reserve, with free shuttle service to the gate.
Entrance for adults is R30, but there is no charge for children,

It is a fund raising event for BotSoc(Hermanus Botanical society) and OCF (Overstrand Conservation Foundation). BotSoc spends about R100 000 pa on maintaining Fernkloof (for the free use of the public) and this is their only fundraising event. The OCF needs to raise funds to pay for one of the Eco-Schools co-ordinators.
